Längst ist die Digitalisierung aus dem ärztlich ­Alltag nicht mehr wegzudenken. Doch der Bedarf nach Informationen zu diesem komplexen wie auch sensiblen Thema ist groß. Mit dem Forum digital bietet der DOG Kongress 2019 eine Plattform um Fragen zu digitalen Anwendungen, Datensicherheit und Big Data zu diskutieren. Neben wissenschaftlichen Sitzungen greifen Vorträge auch Service-Themen auf, die den Teilnehmern praktische Empfehlungen für den Alltag in Klinik und Praxis vermitteln werden.

Smartphones and mHealth to Revolutionize Eye Care
Mobile Technology has introduced significant changes to eye care, last but not least in low-resource settings. Smartphones gain increasing popularity and due to their ubiquity and multifunctionality they might pave the way for the next revolution in medicine. This is especially the case in Ophthalmology, where they allow for smartphone-based funduscopy, an easy and extremely mobile eye examination. This symposium will highlight current promising developments and applications of smartphones and mHealth in Ophthalmology and will also show how mHealth is successfully being utilized in other fields than Ophthalmology.

There is an increasing use of technology in healthcare including in eye care services. Peek Vision is an example, where smartphone technology is used in community and school eye health programmes across health systems to collect real time data. Data is then used to implement changes within programmes.

mHealth provides new opportunities to overcome challenges in glaucoma care such as low population densities and limited resources in low- and middle-income countries. Different examples will be presented and discussed.

Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) is a frequent cause of avoidable childhood blindness, particularly in middle-income countries. The current dependency of telemedicine-based ROP screening on cost-intensive equipment does not meet the needs in economically disadvantaged regions. Smartphone-based fundus imaging allows for affordable and mobile fundus examination and, therefore, could facilitate cost-effective telemedicine-based ROP screening in low-resources settings.

The presentation will show eHA's experience using digital tools to collect and leverage data to inform public health interventions. The focus will be on the case of using GIS technology and geodata in the fight against polio in Northern Nigeria.

In the new era of smartphones and mobile technology, it would be a missed opportunity if this is not utilised to improve the health care delivery of communities. I intend to discuss an acceptable, scientifically validated screening tool with test results from the field during this presentation.
